You may feel down but don't you dare be discouraged by these new attempts at erasing Black History. It looks bad, but it's looked worse before, and we've continued to remain true to who we are.
The government may be pulling back on recognizing Black History Month and our presence overall, but their lack of approval has never stopped us from recognizing ourselves and rising above adversity.
I'll put it like this:
They can't cancel a party they were never invited to.
They can't take away a power that they never gave.
They can't deny our history when it solidifies their present.
They can't refuse our brilliance when they exploit it for profit.
They can't curse our light when they use it to guide their path.
They can't determine our worth when they are not our Creator.
No government, earthly power, or institution has the authority to tell us who we are. We tell the world who we are.
Lift your hanging head and wipe your wet eyes. Take a deep breath and remember that your Creator filled your lungs and gave you life—not the powers that be. Hug yourself and your loved ones as a reminder that you are here and you are enough.
We are the keepers of our history, the voices of our stories, and the truth-tellers of our legacies. Be that, and be you, despite the ways of the world.
Be Black, boldly.
